Deep-engraved The Imperial STARR 'X' Wall-Mounted Bottle Opener—part of our six-piece German-cast series honoring the 100th anniversary of the original Thomas Hamilton patent, issued on April 21, 1925 and the Incorporation of Brown Manufacturing Company on June 8th, 1925. Only 36 of these openers were produced, each marked with '1925–2025'. The logos reflect some of my (David Brim’s) personal experiences of living in Decatur and running Brown Mfg. Company in Avondale Estates.
About a block west of our house on College Avenue sat a row of empty buildings, once anchored by an old gas station. My wife would pass by them daily walking the kids to Oakhurst Elementary School which was just around the corner. We often wondered why nothing ever happened with the space. Then after about 15 years of living here, the strip was finally purchased and revitalized. Rob Holland and his buddies took over the former gas station and turned it into a restaurant and bar called The Imperial. Since it’s less than 300 steps from our front door, I might find myself there once or twice a week. Their sweet-and-hot wing sauce is the best!
